Global Initiative: “15 Minutes of Meditation Every Day”

Global Initiative: “15 Minutes of Meditation Every Day”

To all meditation centers and people around the world,

In this era of rapid technological advancement, while material abundance has grown, so too has the pressure on our minds and spirits. The fast pace of life, high-intensity work, complex social interactions, and overwhelming information have made mental health challenges such as anxiety and depression increasingly common.

Meditation, an ancient contemplative practice, has deep roots in the spiritual, cultural, and religious traditions of many civilizations. It transcends boundaries and is now practiced widely across the globe as a powerful way to cultivate physical and mental well-being and inner growth.

On December 6, 2024, the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution designating December 21 as World Meditation Day, marking a new chapter in the integration of meditation into daily life.

We hereby launch the global initiative “15 Minutes of Meditation Every Day”, with the following goals:

On the individual level:

Through daily meditation practice, individuals can regain inner peace and harmony, align the mind, body, and spirit, and develop greater self-awareness—enabling them to approach life’s challenges calm, clarity, grace, and resilience.

On the societal level:

As more people embrace daily meditation, a more positive, peaceful, and harmonious social atmosphere will begin to take shape. This can enhance mutual understanding, reduce conflict, and promote the long-term stability and sustainable development of society.

On the global level:

Promoting meditation as a global lifestyle for health can help bridge cultural and geographic divides, fostering mutual understanding and respect among nations and peoples. It contributes to building a more inclusive, peaceful, and hopeful global spiritual community—bringing more light and hope to the world.

To realize these goals, we propose the following:

Practice daily: Anyone, anywhere, at any time, can take part in this initiative. Dedicate at least 15 minutes each day to meditation in a quiet, comfortable, and undisturbed space.

Embrace diversity: There are many forms of meditation. Each person is encouraged to explore and choose the methods that suit them best—with an open and receptive heart.

Integrate into daily life: Let meditation become more than a brief practice—let it become a way of living. Stay mindful in everyday moments, and remain centered amid external distractions and inner restlessness.

Share and inspire: After experiencing the benefits of meditation, become a messenger of its wisdom. Share your insights and experiences with others, and help create a brighter future for yourself and the world.

We firmly believe that through the active participation and collective effort of people everywhere, we can build a global spiritual home that that is harmonious, beautiful, and uplifting. Let us find peace and joy within ourselves through meditation, and integrate it into our daily lives as a nourishing way of being—bringing light and hope to ourselves and to the world.

15 Minutes of Daily Meditation – A Call to Inner Peace

On March 14th, 2025, Shi Yongxin, the abbot of Shaolin Temple, issued a powerful initiative calling on Shaolin disciples worldwide to "meditate for 15 minutes daily," encouraging them to incorporate meditation into daily life and make it a habit. Today’s fast-paced lifestyle often leads to an overactive and restless mind. Through daily meditation, we can restore inner peace and harmony, even amid life’s busiest moments. Meditation helps align the mind, body, and spirit, fostering self-awareness and enabling us to approach life’s challenges with greater calm, focus, and resilience. Just 15 minutes a day. Whether during the calm of the morning or the serenity of the evening, this brief meditation offers a chance for deep reflection and inner dialogue, helping us nurture ourselves and improve our interactions with others and the world around us. Embracing the Shaolin Temple's initiative, the World Meditation Foundation warmly invites kindred spirits worldwide to answer this call—discover their own peace and joy through meditation, and share this gift with others, spreading light and hope both within themselves and across the world.

Let’s embrace 15 minutes of meditation every day—making it a daily practice that nurtures inner peace and spreads harmony to the world.

Celebrating the Official Launch of the “Preparatory Secretariat of the United Nations World Meditation Day Committee”— Pioneering a New Era for Global Meditation

Shaolin Temple, January 22, 2025 –

The historic Shaolin Temple, a cradle of spiritual and cultural heritage, bore witness to a groundbreaking global milestone: the official establishment of the “Preparatory Secretariat of the United Nations World Meditation Day Committee.” This momentous occasion heralds a transformative chapter for the global meditation movement, bringing ancient wisdom into the heart of modern international collaboration.

Meditation for the Future of the World

Under the theme “Meditation Chan and Future World,” this extraordinary international gathering united leading scholars, practitioners, and visionaries from across the globe. The conference explored the vital role of meditation in fostering personal growth, social harmony, and global well-being in today’s interconnected world.

Organized by the World Meditation Foundation, the Eurasia Center, and the Shaolin Temple, the event received robust support from the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and the Singapore SDG and Leadership Development Center.

Event Highlights: Bridging Heritage and Modernity

The three-day summit combined immersive cultural experiences with forward-looking dialogue, showcasing the profound potential of meditation in addressing modern challenges:

●        Shaolin Meditation and Cultural Heritage - Attendees experienced Shaolin’s rich traditions through martial monk performances, standing meditation, Baduanjin (Eight Brocades Qigong), and a visit to the Damo Cave. These activities offered a deep connection to the essence of Shaolin culture and its meditative practices.

●        Cross-Cultural Collaboration and Exploration -By blending insights from science, art, and culture, the event fostered meaningful dialogue on how meditation can serve as a universal bridge between diverse perspectives.

●        Global Forum on Meditation and Contemporary Issues - Discussions focused on sustainable development, artificial intelligence, and equitable wealth distribution, presenting meditation as a source of insight and solutions for pressing global concerns.

●        Scientific Advancements and Standards for Meditation - Experts explored frameworks for standardizing meditation practices, laying the groundwork for establishing globally recognized meditation standards supported by rigorous scientific research.

A New Platform for Global Collaboration

The highlight of the event was the formal establishment of the “Preparatory Secretariat of the United Nations World Meditation Day Committee”. Mr. Sun Zhaoyang, Chairman of the World Meditation Foundation, stated that the Secretariat will operate under the principles of non-political, cross-cultural cooperation, and sustainable development, with a mission to advance the global practice, study, and promotion of meditation.

Organizational Structure

●        Core Committee: Oversees strategic planning and international coordination.

●        Expert and Scientific Committee: Provides thought leadership and research expertise.

●        Foundation and Project Teams: Manages the implementation of actionable initiatives.

●        Global Meditation Center Network: Connects global resources and fosters cultural exchange.

Meditation: Empowering the Future of Humanity

The launch of the Preparatory Secretariat paves the way for a dynamic new approach to global governance, societal harmony, and individual well-being. By uniting international resources and fostering collaborative innovation, the United Nations World Meditation Day Committee will ensure meditation transcends its ancient roots to thrive as a modern force for transformation.

Meditation offers not only personal peace but also a path to collective progress. This initiative envisions a world that is inclusive, harmonious, and sustainable, driven by the timeless wisdom of meditation and the shared commitment to a brighter future for all.
